Course programme

The skills taught will include competency in the double entry system of accounting and the ability to complete more complex Profit and Loss and Balance Sheets. There will be a grounding elements of VAT and ability to carry out basic analysis of results to budgets. The course is arranged in the following units:- Account Preparation - This involves preparation of extended Trial Balance and investigations of errors in trading accounts Prepare Final Accounts for Sole Traders and Partnerships - This builds on the extended Trial Balance and beginning to prepare and understand the final accounts, such as profit and loss report and the Trial Balance for sole traders and partnerships. Cost and Revenues - This builds on basic costing and introduces students to more complex costing principles. Indirect Tax (VAT) - Gives an overview of the VAT system, including the rates, schemes and the completion of a VAT return. Professional Ethics - Investigates the standards expected of an accountant in relation to regulations and the AAT. Spread Sheet Software - This introduces students to a more accounts focused approach when using spread sheet software. There will be 5 computer based assessment and 1 computer based project. Some elements do include signification amount of writing. Literacy skills are as critical as numeracy skills. Success depends on a number of things, regular attendance, a professional attitude in lectures, completing homework and self-study. At least 50% more time than is spent in College should be spent working independently. Once all units in this level have been successfully completed you will be awarded a QCF Level 3 Diploma on in Accounting from the AAT, which is nationally recognised and can help to improve employment prospects and progression.We offer two study pathways for this level, the in-college pathway involves a blend of tutor and student led sessions which varies for each unit and may include additional work that may be delivered through the Colleges virtual learning environment. We also offer distance learning, where students are taught using our designated online interactive Moodle site and work through the units at home, with the support of college tutors.
