AS/AGCE PHILOSOPHY

If you like to think about, debate and formulate your own opinions on real issues you'll thrive on this course. You'll learn that a philosopher doesn't take anything for granted and questions everything. If you want to be an independent-minded, verbally confident and thoughtful student - this is the ideal starting point.

What qualifications will I need to study on the course?
As well as having a grade B in GCSE English you'll need at least 5 grades C at GCSE or equivalent.

What will I study?

You will consider such questions as do we share the same reality and can we know that? How do we define knowledge? Is morality part of self-interest? Do animals have minds? Do we have freewill or are we determined by our genes and/or environment? And many other questions that have been debated throughout history. You will also look at classical philosophy including Plato's Republic and there will be great emphasis on discussion and debate in the classroom. Philosophy is a highly academic subject and as a result you'll need good written skills.
