Course programme

Art and Design (Fine Art)
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
This course will appeal to students who have an interest in creating and understanding art and the determination to develop that interest. The emphasis of coursework is on individual projects that promote personal interpretation and the development of individual style.

In year one (AS), students will study the relationship between ideas and art and design practice. There will be the opportunity to develop an understanding of the expressive nature of the formal elements of art and design, such as the use of line, colour and texture. Art History research is also an important part of the course. There will be one externally set practical assignment.

In year two (A2), students will research, evaluate, analyse and establish links between their own practical work and the broader art world. Students will also produce a written project linked to practical final outcomes and will develop the ability to identify and resolve creative problems. Finally, there will be an externally set practical assignment to demonstrate the ability to use the language of the subject, the formal elements of art study and personal style.

Careers and Further Studies
This course is suitable for students who wish to study art, craft and design at a higher level. It is appropriate for those looking to take up careers for which an art background is relevant (for example in advertising, publishing, architecture, museums, theatre or art gallery work) and for students with an interest in the subject but who do not intend to study it further.

General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
1. An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must include GCSE Maths and English Language.
2. At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
