Biology (Human Biology)
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
The focus of this course is the biology of humans, although it includes some study of other animals and plants. It is suitable for students who are considering a career based on Biology or Human Biology or who require a science qualification at Advanced Level.
In year one (AS), the study modules include topics such as cell structure, enzymes, the blood system, cardiovascular disease, lungs, DNA, foetal development, infectious disease, cancer, genes and gene technology.
In year two (A2), study topics include the physiology of the nervous system, muscle action, exercise, food farming and populations, genetic diseases, ageing, transplants, respiration, and reproduction.
Both years of study include a significant amount of practical work, as well as theory.
Careers and Further Studies
This course is clearly suitable for any career involving care of people, including medicine, physiotherapy, nursing and sport related jobs. Human Biology also counts as a science qualification for a range of jobs and courses. Many Human Biology-based courses at university also require AS/A2 Level Chemistry.
General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
- An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must include GCSE Maths and English Language.
- At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
