Government and Politics
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
This course will appeal to students who enjoy debating current affairs and politics generally and wish to develop an understanding of the main issues and institutions that shape our world.

In year one (AS), the two units of study concern themselves with questions about modern UK politics such as:
  • How democratic is the UK?
  • Has the UK Prime Minister become a President?
  • Is the House of Lords a 'chamber of horrors'?
  • Should a referendum be used to decide if the UK should join the Euro?

In year two (A2), the two units of study concern themselves with questions about Global Politics:
  • How have the events of 'September 11' changed international politics?
  • Why has there been concern about how to tackle climate change?
  • Should the European Union continue to accept new members?
  • What should be done to help poor countries?

Students on this course have access to a wide range of possible career and Higher Education opportunities. This subject combines well with a range of social science and humanities subjects to lead to university courses. Relevant career opportunities are in law, media, journalism, the civil service, local and central government.

General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
  • An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must include GCSE Maths and English Language.
  • At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
