AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
Philosophy is the investigation of some of the vital issues underlying our existence and social life, such as:
- Is all knowledge â€-learned†or is some already â€-programmed†in our minds?
- Can we always (or ever) trust our senses not to deceive us?
This is a highly academic course that will appeal to students who are prepared to read, evaluate and theorise about fundamental assumptions within our world. It encourages students to analyse everyday assumptions and express informed opinions when defending their positions. Students will learn what key philosophers have to say on these issues and what the criticisms are.
In year one (AS), students will study various topics which will include key approaches in epistemology, the genetic basis of behaviour, reason, experience and justification, God and The World, the debate over Free Will and Determinism.
In the second year (A2), students will study a philosophical text and a further theme (Philosophy of Mind) which will deal with questions such as:
- Do we have a separate â€-mind†or are we just a physical entity?
Careers and Further Studies
The career intentions of any student will benefit from this course, as it will demonstrate the ability to think logically and be analytical.
General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
1. An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must
include GCSE Maths and English Language.
2. At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
