The BTEC Level 3 Diploma requires successful completion of nine units comprised of one mandatory unit, two specialist units plus six optional units. Mandatory units: health & safety in the engineering workplace; mechanical principles and applications; electrical and electronic principles. optional units may include: Maths for engineering technicians; computer aided drafting in engineering; electro, pneumatic and hydraulic systems; properties & application of engineering materials; principles and applications of electronic devices and circuits; application of mechanical systems in engineering. As part of the programme students will also complete functional skills in English, Maths and ICT at the correct level for the programme. Students may also complete the wider key skills: working with others and improving own learning & performance.

About this course




The programme is full-time for one year, starting September and ending in June/July. The exact days and hours depend on the timetable but you can expect to attend for a minimum of 16 hours per week. Please bring a notebook, pens and a calculator.

Course programme

This programme is ideal for students who wish to enhance their employability, enabling them to experience and gain knowledge of both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. It also facilitates progression to HNC or University courses.
You can achieve a Pearson BTEC Level 3 90-credit Diploma in Engineering. After successfully completing the Diploma, you can carry on to the second year to achieve a Level 3 Extended Diploma. This is a nationally recognised and respected qualification, accepted by employers, universities and professional engineering institutions.
The programme is assessed by a range of methods, including projects, presentations, case studies, in-class assignments and coursework. There will also be external tests in some of the subjects studied.
