About this course

Over four months of intensive study the course aims to bring students to a level where they can legally, effectively and ethically manage human agents across a number of fields from journalism to private security. Students will learn how to effectively work with supporting institutions and functions and how to obtain support from them.

The course is aimed at students with no prior knowledge or experience of the intelligence environment. It provides them with the core skills required to function in various intelligence environments across multiple sectors and specialisms. The course also prepares students for professional registration. Experienced and qualified intelligence practitioners should consider direct-entry for professional registration without undertaking the GSC.

Course programme

The course is divided up into ten, two week modules. Learning begins with the foundations of inteligence as a discipline, how it is managed and controlled, working in hostile environments and the four principle areas of intelligence practice; collection, analysis, counter-intelligence and covert action. The course then moves on to covert operations. After mastering the operational basics students move on to studying surveillance countermeasures, soft skills such as debriefing, elicitation, interview and interrogation and tradecraft techniques required for communications with agents in the field. Advanced tactics such as counter-intelligence operations, covert intrusion tactics and special operations planning are covered towards the end of the course.

Each of the modules introduces the student to the subject areas through a number of seminars and course workshops. All material is sourced from open source material or original research and is tailored to contemporary practices across various applications. At every stage students will be expected to apply the conventions of regional and international law to operating procedures to ensure they conduct themselves ethically and legally at all times.
