Engineering
BTEC National Certificate - Two-year course
The qualification is equivalent to two A Levels and students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based upon realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

This is a two-year course made up of:

Five core units:
  • Business Systems for Technicians
  • Communications for Technicians
  • Engineering Project (120 GLH)
  • Mathematics for Technicians
  • Mechanical Principles and Application


Six specialist units are:
  • Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
  • Further Mechanical Principles and Applications
  • Engineering Design
  • Computer Aided Drafting
  • Engineering Drawing for Technicians
  • Engineering Secondary/Finishing Processes and Techniques

The majority of work will be assessed through coursework.

Careers and Further Studies
The BTEC National Certificate in Engineering provides a good career foundation for students in many engineering disciplines as technicians or technician engineers. It is desirable to take AS Mathematics alongside this qualification, particularly for students hoping to proceed to Engineering in Higher Education.

General Entry Requirements
At least four GCSEs at grade C or above or a BTEC First Diploma (or equivalent) in a related area at Merit level.
