Course programme

There are eighteen units to complete that cover a diverse range of subject areas such as mechanical principles, electrical principles, engineering materials, and Computer Aided Design (CAD). The qualification is delivered through a variety of theoretical type learning (classroom based) and may also involve the use of virtual reality type interactive equipment and specialist workshop equipment to complete assignments and project based study. Year 1 - Units for 90 credit Diploma in Engineering Year 2 - Units for Full Extended Diploma in Engineering with options to specialise in mechanical or electrical engineering. You will study the following five core units: - Communications for Technicians - Electrical and Electronic Principles - Mathematics for Technicians - Project (two units) - Mechanical Principles - Health and Safety An additional twelve units need to be selected from a list that includes: - Engineering Materials - Computer Aided Drawing - Engineering Design - Electrical Installation - Manufacturing PlanningYou will learn and develop your skills through a mixture of lessons, demonstrations, assignments and practical tasks in the College workshops. Work experience will be set up for you to gain some valuable experience in industry. Visits to local employers will also be planned. You will be assessed through internal assignments and externally assessed through exams and assignments. You can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. This programme encourages you to undertake your own research to complete the tasks given to you so that you may produce written assignments. A limited amount of practical training will also be given.
