Course programme

The programme is suitable for anyone thinking of continuing their studies onto Higher Education.


The modules studied will include: employment and career planning Improving health, fitness and expedition skills. The programme is a mixture of theory and practical lessons. In addition, students will undertake work experience in the industry to improve their employability levels. The programme will run on a number of days each week and will require approximately 12 hours of study per week. Continuous assessment includes assignments, written and practical tests as well as work experience.


  • Fit 4 Less Stevenage: Students will use the facility over the programme of 6 weeks to learn about and practice fitness training and methods. This will result in students improving fitness levels in preparation for fitness testing relevant for the public services.
  • RAF, Army, and Navy: We have a range of current public service employees come in over the course of the programme to talk to students about future destinations which will be directly linked to the career planning unit. The regulars and reserves will come into NHC to share their experiences and offer students advice and guidance on the next steps of their journey towards a career in one of the services.
  • Police: The head of recruitment for Hertfordshire Police comes into College to discuss what is required of potential recruits in the application and interview process. This gives students a rare insight and invaluable advice and guidance to assist with applications for the Police and for the specials.
  • Fire Service: Students will travel to Stevenage fire station to take part in a number of real life activities such as hose reeling and blind searches with full rescue equipment. This experience replicates tasks that students could expect to undertake in training and also on the job if employed as a firefighter in future.
