Course programme

What does this programme involve? -During this Sports Science Course you can progress through the qualification framework from the Subsidiary Diploma to the 90 Credit Diploma on to the Extended Diploma. This will depend on your entry grades and to how hard you work during the first year of the course. -This course is ideally suited for those with a genuine interest in sport science and fitness, but who also have the ability and determination to succeed on this academic course. We ideally ask that applicants are actively involved with a sports team or health and fitness club as this will enhance their research. There is an expectation for all sport students to take part in college sports teams and enrichment activities, before lessons and on Wednesday afternoons, throughout the year. -This course provides students with an opportunity to gain an insight into the wide and diverse nature of this growing sector. The course retains a strong academic base, whilst including practical units and modules. You will need to be confident, self- motivated and a good communicator as this will stand you in good stead for your research work as well as your work placement. -You will complete projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You will also learn about the employment area you have chosen, and you develop the skills you need to start a career. -Students will develop both knowledge and understanding of the sports and fitness industry as well as develop important practical and organisational skills to support their progression. -The course is made up of a variety of practical and theoretical units from the wide nature of this growing sector. Each unit is worth a number of credits which will make up your final grade. The course is made up of 18 units. The following are a sample of the units, (may vary each year). - Anatomy for Sport and ExerciseSport Nutrition - Sport and Exercise Physiology Instructing Physical Activity & Exercise - Research Methods for Sport and ExerciseSports Injuries - Research Project for Sport and ExerciseExercise for Specific Groups - Sports Biomechanics in Action Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology - Fitness training and programmingWork Experience in Sport - Sports coachingExercise Health and Lifestyle - Sport and Exercise MassagePractical Team Sport - Fitness testing for sport and exercisePractical Individual Sport -The qualification is equivalent to three A Levels, which means that on completion of the course you can either choose to go into employment or into Higher Education. However the qualification will be split over two years and students may gain a lesser qualification in Year 1 and progress onto Year 2. -Students who have progressed to this course and have not gained A* - C grades in GCSE English or Maths will be given the opportunity to upgrade. -All students are expected to organise with our help a relevant work placement each year, in addition to this they are expected to help voluntarily at college enrichment, sporting events around the college and with the local primary schools. -All students without an A*-C grade in English or Maths will be required as a condition of the programme to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme. How will I learn and be assessed? -Assessment is throughout the year for both practical and theory units using a variety of assessment methods and styles. Each assignment will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level and contributes to the unit and overall course grades, which could be PPP MMM, DDD for each A Level equivalent, or a mixed profile, e.g.. PMM etc. -Each of the units will have between 3 to 5 assignments. These assignments may be reports, presentations, practical assessments or research projects. -Attendance in the College is an average of 16 hours per week of contact time, in addition to this it is expected for students to complete a further 8-12 hours of independent study both in college and at home. -To progress from year 1 onto year 2 students will be interviewed to determine their suitability
