Course Description
What will I learn on this course?
The qualification aims to:

§ promote your interest in, and enthusiasm for, chemistry including developing an interest in further study and careers in chemistry

§ appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society

§ develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of 'how science works' in everyday life.

§ develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of chemistry and how they relate to each other

§ develop practical skills including - accuracy, observation, interpretation and evaluation of results

What kind of assessments will I have to complete to get my qualification?
AS Units 1 and 2: written and externally assessed exams Unit 3: assessed practical work

Topics include: Atomic structure, Amount of substance, Bonding, Periodicity, Organic chemistry and Analytical techniques, Energetics, Kinetics, Equilibria, Redox, Groups 2&7, Extraction of metals and 'green' chemistry.

A2 Units 4 and 5: written and externally assessed exams Unit 6: assessed practical work


Topics include: Further Organic chemistry with Synthesis, and Analysis, further study of Kinetics and Equilibria including Acid/base and Redox equilibria, Transition metal chemistry and Thermodynamics.

What kind of student is this course suitable for?
This qualification is suitable for students who:

· Have an interest in, and enjoyment of Chemistry (both theoretical and practical)

· Enjoy solving problems by the application of imaginative, logical and critical thinking

· Want to use Chemistry to support other qualifications or progress onto further studies

What could I do with a qualification in this subject?
· Follow a wide range of degree course e.g. Chemistry, environmental science, medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering etc.

· Employment in a large range of industries.

Entry Requirements
What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?
The qualification builds on knowledge, understanding and process skills inherent in GCSE. Students need to be logical thinkers, able to communicate effectively, research and critically think about chemical problems. It is important that they also have good numerical skills and good practical skills.
It is expected that students will have achieved a GCSE Grade B in Chemistry or B in Core Science + B Additional Science. GCSE Applied Science and BTEC Science courses are not a suitable foundation for AS level. You will also need to have achieved at least a grade B in GCSE Mathematics.
You are recommended to consider taking AS level Mathematics along with Chemistry.
