AS Critical Thinking

The study of Critical Thinking equips students with reasoning skills to use in life, work and further academic study. It provides opportunities for students to think deeply and logically about key issues, including ethical questions and issues of personal responsibility. It enables students to make reasoned decisions that are based on evidence and argument, rather than assumption and prejudice.

What will I be doing?
You will be learning about methods for assessing the credibility of evidence. These methods will enable you to determine which of two conflicting versions of the same incident is likely to be the more reliable. You will also be learning how to evaluate arguments, identify flaws in logic, and develop your own reasoned arguments.

How will I be assessed?
There are two examination papers, each carrying 50% of the total grade. Paper 1 tests analysis of the credibility of sources (individual characters and organisations) within a scenario. Paper 2 includes a multiple choice section and tests analysis and development of arguments.

Where do I go from here?
You will find the skills you acquire in Critical Thinking of great benefit in preparing for a wide range of careers, including the fields of law, academic research, journalism, medicine, business, accounting and engineering.
