AS Level Dance (DANC-S)
Course Description
What kind of student do I need to be?
You need to have a genuine interest in studying Dance.
You need to be physically active and enjoy practical work.
You need to want to study the theory of the subject in detail.
Because this is being offered as an AS Level only it is important that you are taking three other AS Levels which you will be able to continue with in your second year.
What happens in lessons?
The focus is on the development and performance of your own choreography and performing within a duo or trio.
You will have training on technique and on the health and safety of the dancer.
You will begin to develop critical skills for the analysis of choreography and performance within your own work and in professional repertoire.
What will I learn and how is it assessed?
AS Level Dance
UNIT 1 - Understanding Dance 40% written examination.
- Structured and essay style questions set on the dancer as a performer, the process and craft of choreography and the significance of dances.
UNIT 2 - Choreography and Performance 60% internally assessed
externally moderated.
- Section A - Choreograph and perform a 2 to 3 minute solo in response to a question set by the exam board.
- Section B - Perform a 3 to 4 minute dance choreographed by you, or by someone else.
What can I do with a qualification in this subject?
AS Level Dance is a valuable qualification in its own right so can be studied simply because you have an interest in the subject. As such it can provide a contrasting area of study to broaden your AS Level programme.
Degrees in dance at University can lead into careers in teaching in schools and in the community, in choreography, and combine well with other Arts areas such as Drama, Art and Music.
