Method of assessment
There are two modules in the first year and two in the second; each is an examined unit.
Why choose this course?
The concepts and ideas you will study on this course affect every individual, nation states and world organisations in their decision making processes. If you have ever questioned a decision made by a business or a government, then this is the course for you. You will be able to debate, discuss and research the reasons behind some of today's important issues, for example should airlines pay more tax? How do we really make our choices as consumers when we shop? Is Free Trade Fair Trade? Does foreign aid really help the developing world?
Economics is highly regarded by both universities and employers. The qualification is a strong foundation for Business, Investment, Political and Engineering courses. Economics combines well with many courses; in particular Business, Geography, Mathematics, Politics, History and Languages.
What will I study?
The world has infinite wants and scarce resources; you will therefore analyse how and why choices are made. The competition between and decisions made by firms. You will look at the impact on the environment of Business activity and the range of possible solutions that are available to monitor and change this behaviour - is this desirable? Are public services meeting the needs of society? Is there equity and fairness? In the second module the areas considered are from the perspective of you being the Chancellor in the making of Economic Policy. How does this jigsaw fit together? What does a successful economy mean? How and why do we trade with the rest of the world?
Huish Extra
You will have opportunities to take part in trips throughout the course. Students also have opportunities to participate in a national competition organised by the Bank of England and the Young Enterprise competition.
