Course overview
The course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of Electronics. We will ensure that your learning is enjoyable, challenging and relevant to contemporary issues by building on the concepts of How Science Works that are introduced at GCSE.
AS Level (year one)
Unit One
Introduction to Analogue and Digital Systems.
Logic gates, Sequential logic systems and Operational amplifiers
Unit Two
Circuits and Components
Current, voltage, resistance and power, Timing circuits Semiconductor diodes, Simple power supplies,
Signal sources Switching circuits
UNIT Three
Programmable Control Systems Project
Control Principles, Ladder Logic, Microcontrollers
A Level (year two)
Unit Four
Communications Systems
Filters, Modulation techniques, AM radio receiver, Digital, Communications,Systems.
Unit Five
Systems Applications
Counting Systems, Microcontroller Systems, Power Supply Systems, Instrumentation Systems, High Power Switching Systems, Audio Systems.
UNIT Six
Design Project Project
Planning, System development, Complete system, Documentation.
How you will learn
Your lessons will involve a mixture of presentations, problem-solving classes, demonstrations, discussions and, of course, lots of practical work. We aim to make your learning interesting, challenging and enjoyable most importantly, however, we want you to succeed in your study of this subject.
All learning materials are accessible to all students from any computer with an internet connection.
How you will be assessed
The AS is the first half of an A level course. It will contribute 50% of the total A Level marks.
Candidates must complete the following three units in order to gain an AS qualification.
Weighting Within AS
ET1 35% 17.5%
ET2 35% 17.5%
ET3 30% 15%
Candidates must complete the AS units outlined above plus a further two units to complete A-level Electronics. The A2 units will contribute 50% of the total A Level marks.
