Course overview
This course involves the study of English language and the practice of writing for different purposes and audiences. Accent, dialect, how language is changing and how we first learn language are only part of the subject. You could be scripting for radio, writing magazine articles, investigating gender or the language of the internet.
AS Level (year one)
Unit One
On this unit you will study the techniques that writers and speakers use in different contexts to reach different audiences and purposes. You will also discuss attitudes towards gender. How have the views towards the sexes changed over the years? You will examine the effect that technology such as texts and emails are having on the language. Finally, you will examine the Language of Power which includes the study of rhetoric and public speaking, advertising, the language of the classroom and how language can be a struggle for control.
Unit Two
This is the creative writing coursework unit where the more original you are the better. You can write onanytopic and use any genre. For example, you could write for NME, Vogue, Match or start the next Harry Potter book!
A Level (year two)
Unit Three
Again, this coursework allows you to bring personal interests to the course. With close guidance from your teacher, you will be able to investigate any form of language, from the differences between male and female language to the lyrics of your favourite band.
Unit Four
In the Language Acquisition section you will study how children learn to read, write and speak. You will also study writing for children like theMr Menand Roald Dahl. The second part deals with changes over time. Learn astonishing historical facts about the English Languages Germanic roots and the reasons why we dont speak like Shakespeare.
How you will learn
You will learn through a variety of learning methods including class discussions, group work, short lectures, conferences, creative writing workshops and the internet based Virtual Learning Environment .
How you will be assessed
Unit 1 and 4 are exams and Unit 2 and 3 are coursework. You will also be expected to do essays at home and in class.
Special entry requirements
You must have achieved at least a grade C in English Language GCSE.

Visits to English Language conferences are organised, providing students with the opportunity to listen to wellknown experts such as David Crystal.
