AS Level in English Literature
Course summary:
This one-year course leads to an AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification.
Course content:
This course aims to develop an interest in and enjoyment of English Literature, through reading widely, critically and independently, across centuries, genre and gender, and through experiencing an extensive range of views about texts and how to read them.
During the course six texts will be studied
Two prose texts:
*-The God of Small Things* by Arundhati Roy
*-Dubliners* by James Joyce
Two poetry texts:
W.H. Auden: 1 September 1939, Ode, As I Walked out one Evening, If I Could Tell You, Oh what is that Sound, Oh where are You Going, Miss Gee
Thomas Hardy: Under the Waterfall, The Convergence of the Twain, Neutral Tones, The Darkling Thrush, At an Inn, The Going, The Voice, At Castle Boterel, Afterwards, The Haunter, Your Last Drive
And two drama texts:
*-King Lear* by William Shakespeare
*-A Streetcar named Desire* by Tennessee Williams
Course structure:
English Literature combines with all other arts and humanities subjects.
Assessment procedure:
There are two main components to the assessment:
- One two-hour exam paper, which is worth 60% of the total mark
- One coursework folder, which is worth 40% of the total mark
Exam (Prose and Poetry)
There are two sections; candidates must answer one question from each.
- Section A: One question from a choice of poetry or prose.
- Section B: One generic question which covers the three texts not tackled in the first question.
Coursework
One essay of 1200 *" 1500 words must be written on each of the two drama texts.
Qualifications achieved:
GCE AS Level English Literature, awarded by AQA.
Progression opportunities:
Successful students could progress to an A2 Level in English Literature.
