AS Level in Environmental Studies

Course summary:
This one-year course leads to an AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can also be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification.

Course content:
You will study:

Module 1 - Energy, the Atmosphere & Hydrosphere

Module 2 - The Lithosphere

Module 3 - The Biosphere
Advanced level Environmental Science encourages students to acquire and apply scientific knowledge relating to the world around them. Topics such as Biosphere (living things), Lithosphere (rocks & soils), Hydrosphere (water bodies) and Atmosphere provide underpinning knowledge. Students can then proceed to A2 Level to look at how we can best manage our environment.
The subject is a Science discipline and as such provides elements of Life Science, Physical Sciences and Earth Sciences together with relevant legislation & resource management.
The course is taught by both Biology and Geography Staff at the college using their specialist knowledge and expertise. Field and laboratory practical work is available together with guest speakers and outside visits.

Course structure:
Environmental Science may be studied successfully with any of the other Science subjects, Mathematics or Geography. It may also be used to broaden an AVCE or Humanities advanced level program.

Qualifications achieved:
GCE AS Level Environmental Science, awarded by AQA.

Progression opportunities:
The AS level in Environmental Science will support other A level subjects as an entry qualification into many H.E. courses.

Free study and financial support:
Most full-time students do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, if you have just left school, you may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance Allowance.
