AS Level in Film Studies


Course summary:
The course is designed to deepen students†understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film, the major art form of the twentieth century. The course encourages study of a wide range of different kinds of films developing skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection as well as developing creativity and practical skills in audio-visual and written forms.

Course content:
The course is divided into two modules. The first module involves the close analysis of a short extract (up to 5 minutes) of a feature film which examines how sound, camerawork, editing and performance combine to manipulate spectator response.
Students will also be expected to produce a creative piece of work in the form of a film sequence or short film, a storyboard or a screenplay along with a reflective analysis of their own work
The second module focuses on British and American Film. It is divided into three sections i) Producers and audiences ii) British Film and iii) A comparative study two American Films

Assessment procedure:

Module 1: (20% of A Level marks).
Candidates produce two written analysises of their own choice of film and one piece of creative work which takes the form of scriptwriting and producing ideas for their own film.

Module 2: (15% of A Level marks).
One and a half hour examination paper on producers and audiences.

Module 3: (15% of A Level marks).
Two and a half hours of examination paper.

Qualifications achieved:
GCE AS Level Film Studies, awarded by the Welsh Joint Education Committee.

Progression opportunities:
On successful completion of this AS level qualifcation, students can progress to A2 Level in Film Studies.
