AS Level in Geography


Course summary:
This one-year course leads to an AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can also be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification.

Course content:
The AS comprises the

two units below:


Unit 1- Managing Physical Environments

* River Environments
* Coastal Environments
* Cold Environments
* Hot arid and semi-arid environments

Unit 2 - Managing Change in Human Environments
* Managing urban change
* Managing rural change
* The energy issue
* The growth of tourism

Assessment procedure:

Units 1 and 2
Written examination 1 hour 30 minutes
For each unit candidates are required to answer

two questions chosen from

four structured data response questions, in addition to

one question chosen from

four extended writing questions.

Qualifications achieved:
GCE AS Level Geography.

Progression opportunities:
Successful students could progress to an A2 Level in Geography.
At University Geography can be combined with a wide variety of subjects such as Environmental Management, Sports Studies, Business Studies, Computer Studies, Geology, History, Transport Planning and Archaeology.
Geography can lead to working in the Environmental field, the Environment Agency. Also Town and Country Planning and surveying are options. Geography graduates can work in Education in both Primary and Secondary schools and in Retail Management.
