AS
The AS course has two units.



Unit 1 Global Challenges focuses on topics such as Global Hazards, Climate Change and Future Global Challenges such as Migration, Population Pressure and how Globalisation is affecting all of our lives.



Unit 2 Geographical Investigations gives you the opportunity to undertake geographical research, including fieldwork. You will investigate two topics in depth; Extreme Weather and Rebranding Places.

A2
This is made up of the 2 AS units plus two more, which are studied at a higher level.

Unit 3 Contested Planet considers five key world issues. These are Energy Securities, Water Conflicts, Biodiversity Under Threat, Superpower Geographies and Bridging the Development Gap. The sixth topic investigates possible technological solutions to the identified problems.

Unit 4 Geographical Research allows you to develop further the investigative skills acquired at AS and prepares you for the demands of Higher Education or employment. You will choose one topic from a range of options including Life on the Margins - the food supply problem and Pollution and Human Health at Risk.

What kind of assessments will I have to complete to get my qualification?

AS
Unit 1 Global Challenges is assessed by a 1.5 hour written examination which includes short, structured questions and longer answers.

Unit 2 Geographical Investigations is assessed by a 1 hour written examination when you will also be asked about your fieldwork skills.


A2
Unit 3 Contested Planet is assessed by a 2.5 hour examination which includes responses to questions designed around pre-released synoptic resources. Part 1 of the examination will cover 5 of the 6 Unit 3 topics. Part 2 will cover the sixth topic in a synoptic context.

Unit 4 Geographical Research is assessed by a 1.5 hour examination, including a pre-released 'research focus'. You will be asked to answer one question on the option of your choice.

What could I do with a qualification in this subject?

Geography is an ideal subject for students who want to continue to either Higher Education or employment. Geographers study a broad range of subjects in University and also enter a range of professions including environmental management, marketing, retail, social and health sciences, business, finance and law. The skills acquired as geographers make student very attractive to employers.

You will certainly want to make the links between what you learn in the classroom and the world around you. A grade 'B' or above in Geography GCSE is a distinct advantage.
