Course content:
The course is made up of six equally -weighted units.
The aims of the course are to:
* Develop and sustain an interest in health, early years (care and education), social care and issues affecting the care sector
* Acquire knowledge and understanding of health, early years (care and education) and issues affecting the care sector
* Develop skills that will enable you to make effective contributions to the care sector including skills of research, evaluation and problem solving in a work related context
* Prepare for further study and training
The core units that you will be studying in your
first and
second year are as follows:
* Human Growth and Development
* Meeting Individual Needs
* Communication and Values
* Promoting Health and Well-being
* Positive Care Environments
* Investigating Disease
During your second year of studies you will attend a block placement to gain vocational experience in the care sector which will completed at the end of the course.
Assessment procedure:
The course will be assessed through
two externally set examination papers and four pieces of course work throughout the

Progression opportunities:
Upon successful completion of the AS level, students can progress onto the A2 level.
This qualification supports progression into further education, training or employment, as it offers a mix of both theoretical and vocational learning.
Learners who successfully complete have several routes of progression:
* To further training within employment
* NVQ's in Care
* BTEC Higher National Certificates and Diplomas in health and social care-related subjects
* Degrees in health and social care-related subjects
* Other further and higher and social care qualifications
Free study and financial support:
Most full-time students do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, if you have just left school, you may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance Allowance.
AS Level Health & Social Care
