Why choose this course?
History is a fascinating and vibrant subject that will give you the opportunity to develop your own ideas and challenge the opinions of others. Our course embraces a wide range of human activity; cultural, political, social, economic, military and intellectual. You will have the chance to broaden your interests, examine historical issues, challenge existing interpretations and engage with historical debates. You will analyse sources critically, synthesise relevant evidence, make comparative judgements and test existing orthodoxies about the sixteenth century.

What will I study?
At AS, you will be able to explore the series of crises that rocked England during the mid-Tudor period. You will be able to carry out investigations into England's foreign affairs under Mary I and Elizabeth I, including relations with Scotland and Mary Queen of Scots, and relations with France and Spain up to the time of the Armada. You will be able to investigate the long struggle to free the Netherlands from Spanish rule, under the rebel leadership of the House of Orange.

At A2, you will investigate and criticise historical interpretations of Elizabeth I or Philip II and trace the theme of England's changing situation from 1485 to 1603. Coursework will give you the opportunity to pursue a taught topic in more depth.
