Previous study of Mathematics at higher level GCSE leading to the award of at least a grade B, or preferably A or A*. Students considering this course must enjoy Mathematics, especially algebra!

Course summary:
Mathematics at AS and Advanced GCE is a course worth studying not only as a supporting subject for the physical and social sciences, but in its own right. It is challenging but interesting. It builds upon work you will have met at GCSE, but also involves new ideas produced by some of the greatest minds of the last millennium.
This one-year course leads to an A level in Mathematics. It can also be used as a stepping stone to an A level Further Mathematics.

Course content:
Pure Mathematics
Modules C1 and C2 cover:-
Algebra - equations, including quadratics, indices, surds, inequalities, division, factors.
Co-ordinate Geometry - straight lines, quadratics, parabolas, the circle.
Trigonometry - sine & cosine rules, angles greater than 90°, identities, solution of equations.
Sequences and Series - arithmetic and geometric series.
Differentiation - gradients, tangents.
Integration - areas, trapezium rule. Modules C3 and C4 cover:-
Algebra - fractions, functions, transformations.
Co-ordinate geometry - parametric equations.
Trigonometry - identities, equations.
Exponentials and logarithms - eÃ- and lnx

Mathematical models
Vectors
Kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line
Dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane
Statics of a particle

S1 (Statistics) covers

Representation and summary of data
Probability
Correlation and regression
Discrete random variables
Discrete distributions
Normal distribution.

Assessment procedure:
Each module is assessed by a 1½ hour examination. There is no coursework.

Qualifications achieved:
GCE AS Level Mathematics awarded by Edexcel

Progression opportunities:
On successful completion of the AS/A2 in Mathematics (Accelerated), students can progress on to AS/A2 in Further Mathematics.
If you wanted to continue your study of mathematics after â€-A†levels you could follow a course in mathematics at degree level or even continue further as a postgraduate and get involved in mathematical research.
