AS Level Physical Education
Course summary:
Candidates will use evaluation and appreciation of their own or others' sporting performance to acquire and apply their knowledge, skills and understanding.
Course content:
The content of the course will address current contemporary topics in sport such as the impact in the use of ergogenic aids, technology and increasing commercialisation of sport.
Two units are studied:
Unit 1 . Opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle
Section A applied exercise physiology, skill acquisition and opportunities for participation.
Section B will examine the application of theoretical knowledge to a practical situation.
This unit is assessed by a two-hour examination
Unit 2 . Analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer Candidates are assessed on their ability to perform, analyse and evaluate the execution of core skills/techniques in isolation and in structured practice as a player, referee or leader. (2 out of 3).
Course structure:
This one-year course builds on the student†s experience from GCSE to enhance their knowledge and increase their understanding of the factors that affect performance and participation in physical education. The qualification looks to equip students with skills and knowledge required for higher education or the world of work. The course offers students the opportunity to experience and develop an interest in a variety of roles in sport such as performer, official and/or leader/coach at AS and then be able to specialise in one at A2.
Assessment procedure:
Unit 1 is assessed by a two hour examination
Unit 2 is internally assessed and externally moderated.

GCE AS Level Physical Education
Progression opportunities:
After the successful completion of the AS course, students may progress to the A2 level.
