AS Level in Spanish


Course summary:
This one-year course leads to an AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can also be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification.

Course content:
The course builds on what students have already learned at GCSE to study the lives of young people living in countries where the target language is spoken.

The course aims:
  • to develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of the language from a variety of registers
  • to develop effective communication skills in both the written and spoken forms
  • to increase sensitivity to language and language learning
  • to develop critical insights into, and contact with, the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries or communities where the language is spoken
  • to develop positive attitudes to foreign language learning


Topics:


  • Leisure and Lifestyles, including travel and tourism, sport, hobbies, entertainment, customs, traditions healthy living â€" health and nutrition, diet and exercise; unhealthy living â€" drugs, aids, smoking, alcohol, etc


  • The Individual and Society, including relationships and responsibilities, gender issues, youth culture (values, peer groups, fashions and trends etc), education, vocational training and future careers.


Assessment procedure:
Final assessment consists of two examinations - one written examination (60%) and one speaking examination (40%).

Unit SN1: (15 minutes plus 15 minutes preparation time)
This is the speaking examination and consists of a topic-based conversation and a general conversation.

Unit SN 2: (2 hours 30 minutes)
This is the written examination which assesses candidates†listening, reading and writing skills. The listening and reading sections will be based on authentic materials. The writing task will be one essay from a choice of four. The essays will be set on an aspect of each of the two topics.


Qualifications achieved:
GCE AS Level Spanish, awarded by WJEC.

Progression opportunities:
Successful students could progress to an A2 Level in Spanish.
