Course Description
What will I learn on this course?
AS
· Topics will cover: media, popular culture, healthy living, and family.

· Basic grammar and vocabulary to communicate appropriately.

· Reading, writing, speaking and listening skills covered equally.

· Reading materials taken from authentic sources such as newspapers and magazines.

· Listening sources such as news reports, announcements, weather reports and interviews.

· Writing will involve letters or reports to present information and opinions in Spanish.

· Speaking will require speaking fluently on a range of prepared topics.

A2

· All four skill areas further developed, vocabulary widened, grammar practised.

· Writing essays or longer pieces to prepare for Units 3 and 4.

· Speaking skills to require argument and justification of opinions and to move on to unpredicted areas of conversation.

· Preparation for Unit 3: a synoptic unit which tests listening, reading and writing in one examination.

· Two Cultural topics studied in greater depth, for example a film, a novel or a region

What kind of assessments will I have to complete to get my qualification?
AS
· Unit 1 (70%) will test listening, reading and writing skills in 2 hours; answers range from non-verbal to full written responses, including a summary in English.

· Unit 2 (30%) is a speaking exam lasting 15 minutes and consisting of a discussion of a stimulus card, followed by a conversation covering 3 of the 4 AS topics.

A2
· Unit 3 (70%) Reading, writing and listening skills are tested in 2h30 min.

· Unit 4 (30%): Speaking exam lasting 15 minutes and consisting of a discussion of a stimulus card, followed by a conversation covering 3 of the A2 topics.

What kind of student is this course suitable for?
Someone who is interested in languages to communicate and who enjoys learning about other cultures.

What could I do with a qualification in this subject?
If you are thinking of a future career in business, travel, the arts and media, even in conjunction with a science, then learning a world language spoken by 350 million people would be highly desirable.

Entry Requirements
What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?
To study Spanish you will need at least a grade B at GCSE. You must be prepared to talk in Spanish in small groups for oral practise classes with the Spanish Language Assistant, and sometimes to the whole class. It would be ideal if you could go to Spain or another Spanish-speaking country for an exchange or study visit, or a Work Experiences placement during your A Level course.
