Whilst there is no specific requirement for prior learning, students will be expected to have some awareness of the issues covered through their study of a range of subjects at GCSE. It is desirable that students will obtain A-C grades in English and Mathematics before commencing this course.

World Development gives you an opportunity to access accurate unbiased information about the causes of poverty and inequality, how the development of countries differs and the reasons why there are stark differences between them. There is a keen emphasis on global considerations and the interactions between countries and governments. The ultimate aim of this subject is to raise awareness of global issues so that every adult has the knowledge, skills and understanding to influence government policies.
Students will learn how resources can be managed and used responsibly and come to understand the idea of 'sustainable development'. In addition the opportunity to debate topical issues is a big part of the course, particularly issues focused upon the idea of equity and social justice. This is a subject which will require students to have a consideration of spiritual, moral and cultural issues and have an appreciation of different values and attitudes.

Course Units

MODULE 1 Introduction to World Development Issues (2 hour exam)
Four compulsory structured questions, two questions from two themes:

· Theme 1 - Development, resources and global citizenship
· Theme 2 - Poverty and inequality

MODULE 2 Portfolio Analysis of World Development Issues (Portfolio)
· Analysis of three articles from Theme 1,500 words eac
· A comparative essay of up to 1,000 words on Theme 2
