Why study Sociology?
Sociologists want to understand how society works. It is a subject for students who are genuinely interested in people and the society they live in. Sociology will assist students to learn about their own identity and understand the processes involved in the formation of this identity. Students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, taking nothing at face value.
What do I study?
Year 1 (AS)
You will study two units:
Unit 1: Exploring Socialisation, Culture and Identity-this involves studying how identities and cultures are formed, including the process of socialisation.
Unit 2: Topics in Socialisation, Culture and Identity-this unit concentrates on the family. This explores how demographic and social changes have influenced the family.
Year 2 (A2)
You will study two units:
Unit 3: Power and Control-this will study the topic of crime and deviance.
Unit 4: Exploring Social Inequality and Difference-this is a synoptic paper, encouraging students to use all their sociological knowledge gained over the course.
Where does Sociology take me?
It is a respected academic subject and an excellent preparation for Higher Education. It also provides many of the thinking and interpersonal skills required in today's employment market. It has particular value for careers in a wide range of areas from Law to Personnel Management.
