Course programme
Before any candidate can commence any training for this course they will have to first apply to the DSA for registration. The current cost for this £6.99. Information and the address to which to send your application is; LGV Register Section, Stanley House, 56 Talbot Street, Nottingham, NG1 5GU. This DSA Register is open to anyone holding a full Category C or C+E driving licence providing they have held the relevant category of licence for a minimum of 3 years.
The qualification is dependant on passing three elements; an examination on theory, driving ability and finally instructional ability.
Step one the Theory test will need to be taken. This comprises of a 100 multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test. A minimum of 85% overall pass mark is required for the theory questions and a score of 57 for the hazard perception.
Step two is a 10 day training course consisting of two modules; Driving Ability & Instructional Ability. The training conducted is to the DSA Voluntary Register standard and it is recommended that it is taken in two separate stages. The first 5 days will be training the candidate to drive at instructor standard. Provided they pass the required DSA test. The driving ability test is more advanced than the normal LGV driving test. The test is of 1.5 hours duration. A maximum of 6 minor (/) driving faults can be recorded to pass. Any more will result in failure along with any serious faults (S) and Dangerous faults (D).
They would then arrange the remaining 5 days, concentrating on instructional techniques. Again ending in another DSA test. The instructional ability test is where the examiner will adopt the role of a trainee learning to drive and the candidate will be marked upon his ability to demonstrate the appropriate instructional techniques.
Both tests (driving ability & Instructional ability) can be taken on the same day (not recommended) or each test taken separately at the end of each stage of training.
Please note that the maximum number of attempts at each element is three. If any of the elements is failed after three attempts the candidate wait be required to wait for a 12month period before they can re apply for the register.
