LGV Young Driver Scheme

Van Hee is an Approved Training Organisation for the Young LGV Driver Scheme.

By following the scheme it is possible to obtain an LGV Category C licence at the age of 18 years and progress to a Category C+E by the age of 20. In addition the trainee will progress through and achieve an NVQ Level 2 in Transporting Goods by Road.

Entry Requirements
The scheme is open to all young people between their 16th and 19th birthdays, however in order that a trainee can gain maximum benefit from the scheme by obtaining their C+E licence at the age of 20.
The optimum age for commencement is about the candidates
17th birthday.

A provisional LGV licence will not be issued to any applicant under the age of 21 if they have ANY penalty points on their driving licence.
Also trainees must pass the DoT medical prior to application for a provisional LGV licence.

The trainee must be an employee of a company who has been registered with Van Hee and the RHDTC as a registered employer. This involves the company paying a small one off registration fee. During the scheme the trainee must remain an employee of a registered company and is only allowed to drive that company's vehicles.

Scheme Content

1. Completion of an agreement between the trainee, employer and Van Hee. Development of a training plan for the trainee. The trainee is then registered with the RHDTC for which a fee is payable.

2. Induction covering Health and Safety.

3. Certification for Units 1 to 4 of the NVQ/SVQ Level 2 "Transporting Goods by Road."

4. On reaching the age of 18 being in possession of a full category B (car) driving licence and having completed stages 1,2 and 3, the trainee can apply for a provisional Category C driving licence and commence training with Van Hee to obtain a full Category C licence.

5. The trainee can then drive Category C licence vehicles owned by his employer unaccompanied. During the next 24 months they must complete 6 driving assessments conducted by Van Hee and Units 5, 6, 7 of the NVQ / SVQ Level 2 "Transporting Goods by Road." It should be noted that during this period if the trainee accrues more than 3 penalty points on their driving licence they will be disqualified from the scheme and hence lose the Category C driving entitlement.

There is no compulsion to progress beyond stage 5 however a trainee can obtain a category C+E licence after completion of stages 1 to 5 by completing:

6. Category C+E driver training with Van Hee after which the trainee can drive C+E vehicles for their employer under the age of 21 but must be supervised by a C+E licence holder at all times.
