Programme structure

The modules we outline here provide examples of what you can expect to learn on this degree course based on recent academic teaching. The precise modules available to you in future years may vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand.

We anticipate that the majority of students choosing Liberal Arts will study the 4-year integrated Masters option, although this isn’t mandatory.

The first year of the programme will introduce you to the central ideas and methods of the Liberal Arts; you will also begin your training in your chosen language and quantitative fields. You will explore possible Majors, choosing from the subject-areas across the University. In your second year, you will focus your Major and also take the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge and skills to workplace situations in our grounding breaking modules run with employer partners. Year three offers further specialisation in your chosen Major and opportunities for study abroad. Year four gives you entry to Master’s level study in your chosen subject.

The Liberal Arts degree programme is made up of compulsory (core) and optional modules, which are worth 15 or 30 credits each. Full-time undergraduate students need to complete modules worth a total of 120 credits each year.

Year 1

Introductory core modules will give you a grounding in the central ideas, core methodologies and current debates that connect the Humanities, Social Sciences, Life Sciences and even the world of Business and Management. From the outset you also be able to extend your understanding of languages (e.g. Arabic, French, Mandarin Chinese, Latin) and of quantitative methods. At the same time, by following subject studies of your choice, you will begin to focus your field of specialisation, your Major.

You will take 30 credits of the required skills modules and the remaining credits can be taken from the subject of your envisaged major.

Your second year of study consolidates work done in the first while allowing you to begin exploring your Major. You will study a substantial, practice-based core module, which will build directly on the previous year’s work and develop your research, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

You will also study further modules in a language or quantitative method (whichever you didn’t choose during your first year), as well as optional modules selected from a diverse range of humanities and social science subjects.

Students will spend the third year of their studies in a partner university on an Erasmus/Socrates exchange or other approved programme of study. The year abroad comprises 120 credits and assessment is based on the credits gained at the partner institution.

In the MLib Arts programme this year is spent converting your degree into a Masters, by taking specialist modules in your nominated major, before moving on to the final year of the programme.

Year 5

You will take a range of modules in your Major, totalling 60 credits. At least half of these will be drawn from Masters-level modules. Under the supervision of an academic specialist in your chosen field, you will also research and write a dissertation, worth 60 credits. Successful completion of this stage of the programme will convert your Liberal Arts studies into a Master of Liberal Arts degree.
