Our new range of liberal studies degrees provides a true US-style liberal arts education, a first in the UK. In your foundation year you undertake a general education programme which provides a comprehensive foundation for your degree studies. From the first year of your degree, you choose a ‘major’ subject area whilst taking a range of ‘electives’ to tailor your degree to match your passions and interests. Every module in our liberal studies programme has been specifically designed for the degree, delivering you a broad-based education which engages you in critical and interdisciplinary thinking. Liberal arts graduates are well-prepared to make the most of opportunities in a fast-moving global economy. The core of the BA (Hons) Liberal Studies (English) with Integrated Foundation  constitutes an in-depth examination of the history of English Literature from the medieval period, through the Renaissance, Enlightenment and Romantic eras up to the present day. Lectures and seminars will furnish you with the contextual knowledge that will enable you to comprehend and enjoy the literature under discussion. In class seminars you will develop the art of presenting your interpretations to fellow students. Your studies will be complemented by our courses in Shakespearean Drama; US Literature (from the colonial period to the present); Cinematic Adaptation of Literature; Literary Criticism and Theory, and Creative Writing (non-fiction, fiction and poetry). This is an American-style Liberal Studies programme that incorporates an area of specialisation (a major), a general education programme which all students take in their first year providing a broad foundation for your degree, plus electives chosen from a wide range of subject areas to be taken alongside your major.

There is a major project in the final year of study which enables you to open out the specialist area of your major to the breadth of your learning on the whole programme.

It is also possible to undertake a dual major or one or two minor subject areas alongside your major from other subjects offered within the overall programme. Majors, minors and elective classes are offered in the following subject areas:

  • Art History
  • Business and Management
  • English
  • History
  • International Relations
  • Journalism
  • Media and Communications
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Public Relations

There are also elective classes in Music Appreciation, Philosophy, and Theatre.

Students with an interest in other creative media will be able to combine their English studies with elective courses in photography, art and art history and music. Those especially interested in the historical dimension of English studies may wish to choose electives from within the history portfolio. Creative events and performances are a regular feature of University life, especially during the Annual Arts Week.
