Research workers within life sciences and chemical sciences are involved in running and analysing results and experiments, either to expand scientific comprehension, or to develop new products, procedures or commercial uses.

About this course


This apprenticeship is suitable for those who are currently working within this sector or are looking to gain employment within this sector as a Chemical Science Technician or Life Science Technician.

This is dependent on your employer and on the level of the apprenticeship you apply for.

You will normally need at least grade C or above in your English and maths GCSEs. If you don't have these, don't worry. You can work towards your functional skills in English and maths alongside your apprenticeship training at St Helens College.

What type of work will I do and what qualifications will I gain?

Although apprenticeships will vary depending on your entry level and your employer, you will gain a range of skills from the varying tasks you complete, these could include:

  • Develop and maintain a healthy and safe work environment for scientific or technical activities
  • Maintain effective and efficient working relationships for scientific or technical activities
  • Assure quality processes and procedures for scientific or technical activities
  • Carry out risk assessments on scientific or technical activity
You will also have the opportunity to choose from the below optional units:
  • Plan and run scientific or technical projects for workplace activities
  • Develop and provide training for scientific or technical activities in the workplace
  • Plan and conduct scientific or technical investigations
  • Plan and monitor small scale processing activities
  • Manage and monitor the work of scientific or technical teams
  • Write scientific or technical reports for workplace activities

  • Assess their own scientific or technical knowledge and skills for workplace activities

Additional information

As an apprentice, you will be assigned an assessor, who will visit you in the workplace to observe the tasks you complete. You will also complete a number of relevant work?related modules at the College. All of which will contribute to the overall success of your apprenticeship.
