Description of the Course
The course has been designed to equip students with skills that will enable them to live successfully in supported environment. It will provide opportunities for students to develop their independence through practical activities that are directly related to life skills. The timetable will be structured to enable small groups of students to undertake activities on a day/session long basis. This ensures learners are given the time and support they require to develop as an individual as well as part of a team. The course aims provide opportunities for students to develop independence skills. To enable students to develop practical skills for living in a supported environment. To provide students with the opportunities to be proactive partners in their own learning and development.
Course content
Students will learn through practical tasks, which will include:

· Travel Training
· Money Management
· Basic Skills, Communication and IT
· Creativity
· Sport
· Meal Preparation
· Gardening
· Independence Skills at Home
· Health & Safety
· Personal Presentation

Underpinning the above course content will be:

Assessment
Students will have a portfolio of criteria that will be used continually to log and celebrate their successes. This logbook of statements will clearly map out progression and inform practical planning, targeting and teaching. It will also provide evidence that will assist in making plans for the future.

This course is designed for students with moderate learning difficulties who possess some literacy and numeracy skills at Entry 1 to Entry 2.

What can I do after this course?
The course has 2 options as progression routes. Students could go on to access either the Community Awareness or Vocational Access courses in the Foundation Skills department.
Other information
Staffing
It is anticipated that each group would have a maximum of 8 students. Students will have a group tutor who will be responsible for the well being of each individual and provide pastoral support where necessary. Students will be taught, in the main, by their tutor in addition to other members of the staff team. Each tutor group will have a group learning support worker to assist students in their learning.
Monitoring the Learning
Students will have an individual learning plan. This plan provides students with the opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning, logging and monitoring tasks as the course progresses. In consultation with their tutor, the students will identify their own aspirations and goals for learning, which will be monitored through the individual plan.
