This course is for students with an undergraduate degree in any subject who want a qualification in linguistics. Students also write a research dissertation on a topic of their own choice. To help them achieve this, the programme has a compulsory module on Research Training which includes training in specific linguistic research and general social science research. This is complemented by research and transferable skills training from the University’s Graduate Training Programme. Students who have a BA in Linguistics may be exempt from compulsory modules which they have already covered as part of their first degree, or may prefer to follow one of the other MA courses offered by the School.

About this course
The course aims to enable understudies to: Students will be able to produce a research proposal, suitable for masters level.
Students will be able to generate research questions and hypotheses relevant to issues in linguistic research.
Student will understand different research methodologies and be able to identify a suitable method for a research question.
Students will understand methodological and ethical issues pertaining to linguistic data collection and analysis.
Students will develop an advanced understanding of how academic work is written and structured
Students will understand analytical tools, such as statistical procedures, and their appropriateness in the domain of linguistic research.
2(ii) undergraduate degree normally required.
Applicants who do not speak English as their native language must pass the IELTS English test with a score of 6.0 (with no element below 5.5).
