THE TUTOR
Caroline Crossley and Helen Pearson work for BTCV at Skelton Grange Environment Centre, which provides a range of environmental education programmes for 10,000 children and adults a year, both at the centre and through the Flying Slug outreach programme. Helen is Education and Training Manager at Skelton.  She previously worked as a primary school teacher, and has wide experience of the National Curriculum and recent educational developments.  She has also lead creative and arts-based workshops for children and runs many adult training courses. Caroline has many years’ experience setting up and overseeing a successful environmental project, designing and delivering creative environmental programmes, and managing and training volunteers.  She is a qualified teacher and an experienced trainer.

Skelton Grange Environment Centre is in South Leeds, conveniently located close to the M1 and M621, with ample free car parking available and also served by frequent buses from Leeds city centre and a cycle path. A brand new eco-building, with many environmental features including rainwater recycling, solar panels, wind turbine and photo voltaic cells, the centre is located in a 2 hectare wildlife area. On ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINERS NETWORK

Provider description
The ETN training programme is an open programme of short courses designed mainly for people and organisations involved in the environment and aimed primarily at the voluntary sector, although roughly 30% of participants come from local authorities and government funded agencies. We run about 80-90 events a year in a range of subjects, all held in England at various locations chosen for ease of access by all means of transport – typically Birmingham, London, Leeds, York, Manchester, Bristol, Doncaster, Durham, Middlesbrough, Sheffield, Stourport-on-Severn, Sandy, Southampton, Swindon & Peterborough. The events are delivered by trainers drawn from BTCV, other organisations, and freelancers – they are all practitioners and experienced in their field. The organisations in the loose network, listed in the column on the left, contribute in various ways such as acting as a source of trainers or venues, training needs information, or helping to market the programme by circulating the publicity information through their organisations, own networks and contacts.

Course provider history
The Environmental Trainers Network (ETN) is a loose, informal network of organisations across the environmental voluntary sector. ETN itself was established in 1991 as a network of trainers and training managers in environmental organisations. Its activities are broadly overseen by a Steering Group currently drawn from Black Environment Network, BTCV and RSPB. Until about 1997 ETN received funding from the then Countryside Commission (now merged into Natural England) which it used to hold meetings and provide services for its members. Once this funding ceased, the Steering Group decided to focus its efforts on maintaining the training programme, which it first began running in 1994.
