Course introduction: The legal and accounting professions have traditionally been closely associated and a good grasp of accounting can give you a competitive advantage in the employment market. Fully accredited by the Law Society of Scotland, this degree will enable you to apply for the Diploma in Legal Practice (also known as PEAT 1), the next step on the way to becoming a qualified solicitor or advocate in Scotland. The LLB (Hons) with Accounting is also an excellent qualification if you wish to work in other professions, particularly those related to business and finance.

Course programme
This course gives you a broad foundation in the law of Scotland and also provides you with knowledge of accounting. In the first three years you'll study all the subjects specified by the Law Society of Scotland to enable you to seek qualification as a solicitor. In addition, in each year you'll take one accounting module. In fourth year, you'll take two further accounting modules plus two optional law subjects, some focussing on specific areas of law not so far covered in the degree, such as Sports Law, and others being more discursive, enabling you to reflect on the function of law in a wider economic, political, international and social context. You'll also write a dissertation on a legal topic of your choice. The LLB (Hons) with Accounting is a full-time course. You may graduate with an LLB Ordinary degree after three years or an LLB with Accounting Honours degree after four years. It's not possible to graduate with a combined LLB Ordinary degree. If you already have a first degree you can apply for our graduate accelerated programme and complete an ordinary LLB in two years. It's not possible to graduate with a combined accelerated LLB Ordinary degree. You'll learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures and tutorials, and also through interactive practice sessions and independent study. Additional information
This degree is fully accredited by the Law Society of Scotland. It also provides you with knowledge of the associated discipline of accounting. Completion of the LLB (Ordinary or Honours) is stage one of qualifying as a solicitor in Scotland. Stage two is the Diploma in Legal Practice (DLP) also known as Professional Education and Training Stage 1 (PEAT 1) currently offered by six universities in Scotland. Places on the DLP are allocated according to marks achieved in compulsory modules, typically taken in years of the LLB. The DLP is a vocationally orientated course designed to prepare students for stage 3 (PEAT 2, also known as the traineeship). Law is a competitive profession and completion of the DLP is no guarantee of a traineeship. Many Law students choose not to enter the legal profession, but use their LLB as a stepping-stone into other professions, particularly banking, finance, the civil service, teaching and the police. Some go on to further study or go into business.
