LLM (Financial Regulation and Compliance)

Mode: full-time

Almost every day a new story hits the headlines demonstrating the vital importance of proper vigilance and a high level of scrutiny in relation to the regulation and compliance aspects of investment. As a graduate of the LLM (Financial Regulation and Compliance) you will understand not only the financial side of investment, but also its legal, regulatory and compliance aspects and the ethical values which should underpin practice in this area. The need for such specialist graduates has never been more apparent.

BPP Law School has been designated by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) as a 'Centre of Excellence' in the field of investment regulation and compliance. This means that if you graduate with our LLM (Financial Regulation and Compliance) you will be eligible for full student CISI membership and will qualify for the award of the CISI Diploma in Investment Compliance* in addition to the LLM.

Preparing you for practice

In today's competitive employment market an additional qualification in a specialist subject will set you apart from other candidates and facilitate your career progression. BPP's LLM (Financial Regulation and Compliance) is practice-focussed and as such includes the following elements:

  • taught by a mix of experienced practitioners and academics
  • first rate resources designed to simulate life in practice
  • speaker programme developed to give you as wide exposure as possible to the financial regulation and compliance environment
  • personal tutor support and guidance to increase your confidence and assist you in realising your potential
  • a wide range of modules giving you the opportunity to specialise in a particular area of financial regulation and compliance
  • opportunity to gain clinical legal experience through our award-winning pro bono centre
  • access to a job vacancies database with a large range of legal posts, including some which are exclusively open to BPP students
  • networking with like-minded students wishing to specialise in financial regulation and compliance

How is the programme taught?

The programme is taught by a mix of staff from academic and practice backgrounds. This enables BPP to provide you with an advanced knowledge of the academic and theoretical framework of these specialist areas as well as ensuring that what we teach is relevant to the needs of firms and chambers.

The focus of the programme is on self-study and research and learning in small groups with a one and a half hour seminar held in each module per week and a one hour whole group session every fortnight. This gives you the maximum opportunity to interact with and exchange ideas with both tutors and your colleagues on the programme.

Guest speaker programme

Our guest speaker programme is designed to give you as wide exposure as possible to the international business law environment and includes talks from a variety of eminent academics, financial regulation and compliance practitioners, those involved in financial regulation and compliance, commerce and the public sector.

Assessment

The method of assessment for each module will be made through a combination of:

  • memorandum of advice (30%)
  • written examinations (70%)

You must also submit a dissertation of 10,000 words on a subject related to financial regulation and compliance. To help you succeed you will be supervised throughout this assignment by an academic and a practitioner from a relevant area of law.

You will receive feedback and advice on your work throughout the programme, to ensure that you make progress and achieve your goals.
