Overview The MSc Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Long Term Conditions and Long Term Care) is aimed at nurses and health, social work and social care professionals who are working with people with long term conditions in their homes, care homes or in the acute sector.



Students are able to enhance their knowledge and develop their clinical, professional and research skills within an inter-disciplinary learning environment.



Study areas include research methods; advanced practice; safe and effective care; self-care management; physical, mental and social well-being needs of people with long-term conditions and technology based assistive devices in health and social care. Students explore creative ways to place the user at the centre of service delivery.



Students will learn how best to facilitate self-care management, through user and carer engagement and the use of technology-based assistive devices such as telehealth, telecare and telemedicine. Students will be taught how to innovate whilst ensuring safe and effective care by applying whole systems thinking to ensure proactive risk management.

Course Content Length of course:

The normal period of registration for a Masters degree is one year's taught programme for full-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation) or two years' taught programme for part-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation).

Students will learn how best to facilitate self-care management, through user and carer engagement and the use of technology-based assistive devices such as telehealth, telecare and telemedicine. Students will be taught how to innovate whilst ensuring safe and effective care by applying whole systems thinking to ensure proactive risk management.

Students will study six core modules, one elective module and complete a dissertation.

The range of modules available ensures that students can tailor the MSc to their career and personal development needs. It is also possible to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate. In consultation with the Programme Director, those students working with older people will be actively encouraged to select the 'Evidence based dementia care' or 'Making a difference: Research and Development in Care for Older People' module for their elective.

Teaching and Assessment

A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including university-based taught modules; e-learning and work-based learning. Modules are run by experienced practitioners and leading researchers, using a variety of direct and interactive teaching methods. Students will learn in large and small multi-professional and multi-disciplinary groups and will be supported and encouraged to participate in independent learning.
