To teach the relevant job safety knowledge and practical skills necessary for the safe and efficient operation of hydraulic lorry loaders (Hi-Ab, Atlas, etc) to operators and persons involved in the use of these types of appliances. This course covers the use of lorry loaders involving the use of general slinging applications, or clamps and other attachments as applicable. Suitable for: It is intended for both novice and experienced operators

About this course

Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook and other sources of information, regulations and legislation applicable to the particular machine to be used
Be able to locate and identify the major components of the vehicle and loader crane and explain their functions
Be able to locate and identify all operating controls and explain their functions
Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
Configure the vehicle and loader crane ready for travel
Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas
Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out lifting duties
Correctly deploy the stabilisers according to stated manufacturer’s specifications
Comply with all requirements for rated capacity indicators or load moment indicators
Identify weights and centres of gravity of loads to be used
Carry out lifting operations using the full capabilities of the loader crane
Position loads accurately at designated locations including onto and from the vehicle
Identify, fit and remove various attachments and lifting accessories as appropriate
Minimise load swing and ensure load security on the vehicle
Carry out all end ofshift and shut down procedures

Courses are delivered at customer sites on dates to suit the customers needs. The training is conducted on customer equipment
Site must have access to the equipment and be able to provide an in date LOLER ticket for the machine.

Course programme

Learn how to safely and efficiently operate a hydraulic lorry loader.
On completion of the course you will understand the statutory requirements and the need for safety training. The course covers machine capacities and stability, safe operating procedures, machine and control familiarisation, daily checks and fault reporting, preparing for work, inspection and use of lifting tackle, procedures for practical slinging, loading and unloading, signaling and the use of clamps and attachments, and much more.

Course Duration

1 or 2 days depending on number of candidates and experience and specific applications of the machine – maximum 3 x candidates per course(6 if assessment test only)

Course Content

Classroom based theory training to inform candidates of the relevant legislation / statutory requirements (HASWA 1974, PUWER 98, LOLER 98 etc), raise awareness of site safety and develop understanding of the vehicle & crane engineering / stability principles including lifting capacities and de-rating required depending on circumstances / application. Practical Demonstration on thorough pre-operational checks prior to putting crane or any lifting accessory (slings) into use.

Exercises to develop understanding the function of all machine controls including correct application of each function for loading and unloading of lorries with various loads. Demonstrations and supervised practical exercises to develop skills in siting the lorry and setting up ready for operation on varying terrain including slopes, in open areas and confined spaces. Demonstrations and supervised practice in correct slinging techniques, use of specific attachments, and banks person signals. Correct stowing & securing of crane & safety precautions prior to leaving site / taking lorry on the road.

Course Certification

On successful completion of a theory test consisting of both open and multiple choice questions, and practical assessment using a progressive assessment report, successful candidates will receive a Certificate of Training in Basic Practical Skill and Ability.

Course Documentation

Nationally recognised & registered Certification (Either ALLMI or NPORS) with Photo ID Card forwarded to Employer.

Course Location

On-site at Customers premises or other nominated venue. (subject to customer providing machine and vehicle).

Staff Instructors

Safe-T-Solutions Instructors involved in presenting this course are qualified and experienced instructors, and are also trained & tested in the use of Hydraulic Lorry Loaders.
