I.M.I. Award in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 1

The course consists of 7 units for the full certificate.

Unit 1 - Working safely and effectively - This unit is about the Health and Safety requirements and procedures, which need to be followed in order to work safely within the motor vehicle industry. It is also about the environment you work in and the people you work with. All successful businesses need their employees to work as a team and this unit looks at the ways in which you relate to your colleagues.

Unit 2 - Foundations skills - This unit covers the underpinning knowledge skills associated with the repair, servicing and maintenance of light vehicles. It also requires the student to acquire an understanding of their role in health and safety and developing safe working practices.

Unit 3 - Vehicle construction and routine maintenance - This unit covers chassis construction and associated body safety features. It also covers the principles of routine maintenance of light vehicles.

Unit 4 - Operating principles (Tyres, Brakes, Steering, Suspension) - This unit covers the use of wheels and tyres and the operating principles and routine maintenance requirements of braking, steering and suspension systems as used in light vehicle applications.

Unit 5 - Operating principles of engines - This unit covers the operating principles and maintenance requirements of engine mechanical, lubrication systems, liquid cooled and air-cooled systems and conventional ignition systems as used in light vehicle applications. It also covers the operating principles and component identification of carburetor and fuel injected system and compression ignition systems used in light vehicle engines.

Unit 6 - Operating principles of transmission - This unit covers the operating principles and maintenance of drive shafts and final drive shafts fitted to light vehicle applications and the operating principles and layout of manual transmission systems and clutches used in light vehicle applications.

Unit 7 - Operating principles of electronic and electrical systems - This unit covers the operating principles and maintenance requirements of starting systems, battery charging systems and the auxiliary equipment fitted to light vehicle applications.
