What is M_o_R?
M_o_R® (Management of Risk) is a Best Practice Guidance framework provided by Axelos, a leading a leading best practice provider formed jointly with the UK government. M_o_R® considers risk in four areas of business: strategic, programme, project and operational. The framework links easily with other management disciplines such as project and programme management while maintaining their respective terminologies and methodologies.
Case Study
The Rehabilitation Hospital, part of the King Fahad Medical City complex of four hospitals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia used M_o_R® in order to create a high-quality risk policy and become one of the first hospitals outside the US to receive accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
In 2008, the Rehabilitation Hospital made a strategic decision to go for CARF accreditation, which would indicate to patients and stakeholders that it met the highest standards of quality and care. In order to achieve this, they needed to create a risk management policy. As the organisation did not have an existing risk strategy, they had to create one from scratch.
Working with a consultancy organisation, the hospital implemented M_o_R®. Using the framework, risks were categorised into policy, strategy, processes and organisation capability. In addition to this, risk registers, where risks were rated according to the impact they could have, were introduced, and the most senior person who would deal with the risk was nominated a Risk Advisor. The highest scoring risks in each department were put on to the main risk register, ensuring that the biggest risks that could affect the hospital itself could be managed accordingly.
Overall, M_o_R® has helped give The Rehabilitation Hospital much higher standards of care, patient satisfaction, and staff safety. In an analysis using the P3M3 portfolio management assessment framework, the hospital reached level 3 in risk management – higher than other organisation assessed in risk. The hospital’s risk policy is so successful that there are now plans for it to be rolled out across the entire King Fahad Medical City.
M_o_R® is a registered trade mark of AXELOS limited
