Course detail

MA Innovation Management is part of the Culture and Enterprise Programme. It focuses on the need to equip graduates with the intellectual and practical abilities to operate creatively and strategically as an innovation manager within complex environments and contexts, and to continue their development academically and professionally. In order to do this, students need to be able to work cooperatively as well as independently, to explore and experiment, and to map and plan.

MA Innovation Management helps students develop their knowledge and understanding of the complex interrelating discourses and practices influencing innovation management, whilst also equipping students with the necessary cognitive and practical skills with which to provide critical responses to them.

We support students to think and learn both independently and as an important member of teams, establishing and conveying, with conviction, their own critical position so that they emerge with a clear set of principles and practices to underpin their future career.

Our goal is to develop graduates with an ability to cross discursive, practice, subject and organisational boundaries. Our graduates should have the ability to work – managing themselves and others – in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team on projects that are often global in nature, in open and responsible ways. This is in line with changes to the design industry over recent years, as well as the transformations in the demands of business and society that recognise the importance of creativity, critical thinking and familiarity with uncertainty.

Course structure

This course is made up of three units, each of 60 credits.

Unit one: Exploration and experimentation

Encourages students to experience and experiment with some of the key theories and practices of innovation management as we construct it. Key here will be to explore the different practices and discourses of innovation management and to experiment in the production of strategic outcomes, and to consider the roles that uncertainty, failure and success, play in developing and managing innovation strategies. This unit is broken down into component projects, each of which contains different types of teaching and learning activities, with submissions that include individual written work and team presentations.

Unit two: Mapping and positioning

Also contains a number of component projects, this time to help students orientate themselves in theoretical and practical landscapes relevant to the disciplines of innovation management, as well as to embark upon a self-initiated piece of field work that supports their own field of enquiry. The projects in this contain a range of teaching and learning activities, with submissions that include individual written work, team presentations and field work.

Unit three: Independence and cooperation

Allows students to further their own field of enquiry, and to articulate critically their findings. Students will also work together to deliver a series of end-of-year events that showcase their work as individuals and a collective. This unit is also composed of different projects, each of which contains different teaching and learning activities, with submissions that include individual written work, team presentations, and the organisation, management and delivery of end-of-year events and supporting material.

Industry collaborations

Working with paying clients on live briefs will give you valuable commercial experience which may mean your work being taken forward for production or, if so desired, in the purchase of your intellectual property. All paid projects are conducted within a carefully developed legal framework, which includes student agreements to protect your work and help you realise its commercial value.

Once you’ve graduated, you may be picked as part of a small team to work on a live creative brief, organised by our Business and Innovation department, under the supervision of an experienced tutor. This can be a valuable first step in working professionally in a chosen discipline and has resulted in graduates being hired by clients.
