MA in International Sports Business – starting Fall 2018
Richmond is the only university in the UK that has developed a very successful US- accredited undergraduate programme in International Sports Business. Building on this success, Richmond’s one-year master’s programme provides students with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience of sports business and football culture in the UK. The programme is located in London and aims to develop your understanding of sports business in an international context). Our Master’s degree in International Sports Business builds on our teaching and research success and provides graduate students with a programme of study that is underpinned by the best sports industry practice, knowledge and partnerships.
There is a non-mandatory co-curricular sports component to Richmond’s MA Internationals Sports Business programme that will contribute the development of your practical skills (football training, playing and coaching). The programme provides students with an opportunity to acquire the practical skills as well as a learning environment in which you are encouraged to think strategically about the management of sports businesses. Through lectures, seminars, workshops and independent research you will gain skills to explore creative solutions for the sports industry. In combination with training, playing and coaching sessions, you will explore exercises in team building, leadership, motivation, fitness and athlete management. Our aim is to help our students develop a higher level of understanding of the sports business in an international context and demonstrate how sports has become a global phenomenon within the wider service sector.

Course programme

The structure of the MA is organised as follows – there are three core courses in the fall semester, as listed below, and two core course in the spring semester with one elective, as specified. Students who wish to opt out of the internship choose a more extensive dissertation.

All courses run depending on demand and faculty availability.

The MA dissertation is written over the summer semester.

Fall Semester (12 credits)

  • Contemporary Issues in International Sport Management
  • Strategic Management in Sport
  • Sports Law, Contracts, and Negotiation

Spring Semester (12 credits)

  • Sports Economics and Finance
  • Sports Marketing

Plus one of the following

  • Social Responsibility and Diversity in Sports
  • Leadership & Management in Sports
  • Organisation and Management of Sports Events
  • Psychology of Performance in Sport and Business
  • Coaching & Management of Sports Team

Football (Soccer) Co-Curricular Activity

  • Football training and coaching sessions with FA and UEFA qualified coaching staff three times a week (2-3 hours) in modern, state of the art training facilities

Summer Semester (12 credits)

Extended Dissertation without internship, 15,000 – 20,000 words (12 credits)

Or

Dissertation with internship, 10,000– 12,000 words (8 credits, plus 4 credits for internship)

Note: Additional support sessions will also be offered in academic skills (such as for research methods) and preparation for interview
