On successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • Accounting context – you will look at a range of contexts in which accounting can be seen as operating, not only within business entities, including a critical understanding of market theories. You will also cover elements from ICAEW Certificate in Finance, Accountancy and Business (CFAB) including business objectives, functions and business structures. The role of accounting and finance, the role of the accounting profession and the impact of the external environment. Also, core micro and macro-economic theory related to business objectives, functions and business structures, the role of accounting and finance and the impact of the external environment, business-related micro and macroeconomic theory;
  • Language and practices – the main current language and common practices used within accounting contexts, as well as a number of alternative practices, such as alternative recognition rules and valuation bases, approaches to control and decision making. You will also look at elements from ICAEW CFAB and IFA Level 5 Diploma for small and medium enterprises (SME) Financial Managers to include theories and models of taxation including; tax administration, corporation tax, and Value Added Tax (VAT);
  • Preparation and recording – methods of preparing financial statements, including the maintenance of financial records. You will look at the main methods and techniques of recording and summarising transactions and preparing financial statements. You will also cover elements from the ICAEW CFAB and IFA Level 5 Diploma for SME Financial Managers to include a critical examination of methods of preparing financial statements including the maintenance of financial records;
  • Analytical tools and techniques – theories and models of pricing, management decision making and performance management using analytical tools and techniques you will look at the key tools and techniques utilised to analyse organisational performance, prepare budgets and construct reliable forecasts. You will also cover elements from ICAEW CFAB and IFA Level 5 Diploma for SME Financial Managers to include critical analysis of pricing theory and models;
  • Legislation and governance – assurance and professional ethics, the impact of civil law on business and professional services, company and insolvency law;
  • Management and leadership – theories related to planning activities, competence reviews, monitoring performance, coordination of activities and effective communication;
  • Business strategy analysis – you will study the theories, models, frameworks, tasks and roles of management together with rational analysis and other processes of decision making within organisations and in relation to the external environment. You will also cover elements from ICAEW unit on business strategy: critical evaluation of strategic position, strategic options and strategic implementation impacting organisations;
  • Financial management – you will study the theoretical tools and theories of finance and their relevance and application to theoretical and practical problems: capital budgeting criteria, asset pricing models and the valuation of securities and cost of capital risk management, term structure and the movement of interest rates and determination of exchange rates. You will also look at the elements from AAT Level 4 and IFA Level 4 and 5 Diploma for SME Financial Accountants.
