Course programme

Overview

Effective management is based on understanding how organisations and markets work. We focus on helping you achieve this understanding through the analysis of key disciplines like economics, finance, statistics, law, psychology and sociology rather than by teaching you specific techniques.

Our recent graduates have gone on to work in a great variety of areas, including management consultancy, banking, accountancy and general management. Many others have gone on to study at postgraduate level.

Features of LSE courses

This degree provides an intellectually demanding, broad preparation for management, drawing upon the wide range of social science disciplines taught at LSE, including economics, psychology, and sociology. It progresses from foundational social science courses through subjects that apply social science to the analysis of managerial issues and finally to subjects in functional disciplines of management. It provides opportunities to sample courses offered in a multitude of LSE departments, including International Relations, Social Policy, the Operational Research and Employment Relations and Organisational Behaviour Groups.

Across the degree, subjects require students to display skill in both formal reasoning and quantitative analysis, characteristic of economics, and conceptual and practical reasoning, characteristic of other social sciences. Some examinations are based on formal problems, while others are essay based. Applicants are selected, in part, for their aptitude across this spectrum of intellectual styles, and the degree structure is geared to building on this base. For instance, you will take courses enabling you to develop knowledge of essential mathematical techniques such as calculus.

Degree structure

The degree involves studying 12 courses over the three years. Compulsory subjects include Principles of Economics, Introduction to Psychology and Behavioural Science, Economics for Management, Process of Management, Elements of Accounting and Finance, Social Science Research Methods for Management, Strategy, Marketing, and International Context of Management.

Teaching and assessment

You can expect between 12 and 15 hours of lectures and classes a week. Classes involve smaller groups of students and are compulsory. In the first and second years there will be some additional regular seminars given by the Managerial Economics and Strategy Group including career development (with LSE's Careers Office). You will meet with your academic adviser each term to discuss your academic progress and any problems you might have.

You will take examinations in May or June in the courses you have followed during the year. The class of degree you will attain will be based on your performance over all three years, with the emphasis on marks gained in the second and third years.

Study abroad

An opportunity for students who excel on the BSc Management programme to study abroad is available through the MSc International Management programme, an exchange programme with top management schools in the United States and Europe. Students who are interested in the possibility of studying abroad are encouraged to secure at least one good quality summer internship as some work experience is required for the exchange with schools in the US.

Which international qualifications are accepted?

A wide range of international qualifications are accepted in lieu of A levels, for example the American College Board Advanced Placement (AP), the Irish Leaving Certificate (ILC), the European Baccalaureate (EB), the French Baccalaureate (FB) and the Abitur. Canadian and Australian High School Diplomas are also accepted.

In addition strong applicants with other international qualifications may be asked to sit our LSE Entrance Examination|. This allows LSE academics to see examples of written English performed under examination conditions and is particularly useful where school certification is not based upon a standardised national curriculum. The Entrance Examination, which comprises a précis section, an essay section and a Mathematics section, can be taken at any recognised centre anywhere in the world; without any financial cost.
