The course can be delivered in a flexible format, but generally involves attendance at two half day workshops and three one day workshops, over approximately four months.

Course Structure
There is one mandatory unit â€-Understanding the Management Role- and two optional units â€" Managing for Efficiency & Effectiveness- & -Becoming an Effective Leader- Topics include:-
  • The nature and purpose of organisations
  • Stakeholders and their objectives
  • Systems theory and process design
  • Key responsibilities of the leadership role
  • Setting direction for significant projects
  • Stimulating innovation and enterprise
  • Relationship management, including inspiring, influencing, networking and conflict management
Qualification Aims
The ILM Level 5 Award in First Line Management aims to give practising or potential middle managers formal development in this role, by focusing on the knowledge and skills to enable them to perform as effective managers.

Assessments/Examinations
The course will be assessed by a combination of methods as follows:-
  • Understanding the Management Role â€" a Work Based Assignment of approximately 2000 words
  • Managing for Efficiency & Effectiveness - a Work Based Assignment of approximately 2000 words
  • Becoming an Effective Leader- A Reflective Review of approximately 500 -1000 words
  • A workbook to accompany each unit
